Interpretation of the Spectra Originating from the Photospheres Contaminated with Dust - Experience in L and T Dwarfs

چکیده
An essential feature of substellar dwarfs compared with the Sun and stars is the formation of dust in their photospheres (not in the outer envelope). It appears that the observed data could be understood if the dust exists in a form of thin cloud deep in the photosphere rather than in the cooler surface region. Recent observations also show that the dust column densities in the observable photosphere are quite different for the same effective temperature, gravity, and metallicity, but the reason for such a sporadic variation is unknown. Moreover, the effect of dust cloud is difficult to discriminate from those by other basic parameters such as the effective temperature which also has significant effect on the dust column density. For this reason, the spectra of dusty dwarfs were in fact misinterpreted by ourselves and will be reanalyzed in this contribution. Also, even the spectral classification is not free from such a difficulty, as is evidenced by an odd “brightening” of Mbol plotted against the L and T types.

Unified Model Photospheres for Ultracool Dwarfs of the Types L and T ?
The presence of the two distinct groups of ultracool dwarfs (UCDs), ‘L’ and ‘T’ types, is now well established: L dwarfs are thought to be dusty while T dwarfs show strong bands of methane (CH4) but little evidence for dust in their spectra. So far, different model sequences, which we referred to as the dusty model (or case B) and dustsegregated model (or case C) have been considered for L and ...

متن کاملTransition from L to T Dwarfs on the Color-Magnitude Diagram
The color-magnitude (CM) diagram of cool dwarfs and brown dwarfs based on the recent astrometry data is compared with the CM diagram transformed from the theoretical evolutionary tracks via the unified cloudy models (UCMs) of L and T dwarfs. A reasonable agreement between the models and observations is shown for the whole regime of ultracool dwarfs covering L and T dwarfs, and this is achieved,...
متن کاملDust in the Photospheric Environment: Unified Cloudy Models of M, L, and T Dwarfs
We report an attempt of constructing unified cloudy models for M, L, and T dwarfs. For this purpose, we first discuss opacities as well as thermochemical properties of the cool and dense matter. Below about 2000K, refractory material condenses and dust will play a major role as a source of opacity. Then a major problem in modeling the photospheres of very cool dwarfs is how to treat dust, and e...
متن کاملOptical spectroscopy of DENIS mini-survey brown dwarf candidates
We present optical (6500-9200Å) spectroscopy of eight cool dwarfs detected in a 231 square degree “Mini-survey” of the Deep NEar Infrared Survey (DENIS) data. We are able to confirm that the spectral types derived from the Mini-survey infrared spectroscopy are meaningful. We provide a spectral sequence which extends beyond the M-dwarf range and into the proposed “L” class of dwarfs. The dominan...
